How to Play Kickoff Tactics — A Complete Beginner’s Guide

Kickoff Tactics is a fast-paced mobile card game where you build a deck of real-world footballers and go head-to-head against other players in 8-round matches. If you’ve played Marvel Snap, you’ll feel right at home — but this time it’s all about the beautiful game.

Here’s everything you need to know to get started.

The Basics — What Are You Trying to Do?

The pitch is divided into three zones. Your job is to control as many zones as possible by playing footballer cards with higher combined power than your opponent’s in each zone.

Goals are scored at two key moments — the end of Round 4 and the end of Round 8. At each of these checkpoints, you score one goal for every zone you control. The player with the most goals after Round 8 wins. If it’s a tie, the player who controlled the most zones overall takes the victory.

Your Deck

Each player has a 15-card deck made up of 11 starting players and 4 substitutes. Your substitutes — one Forward, one Midfielder, one Defender, and one wildcard — are added into your deck gradually between Rounds 3 and 6, one per round. Goalkeepers cannot be wildcards.

Every card represents a real licensed footballer and has two key stats: their position (GK, DF, MF, or FW) and their energy cost, which ranges from 1 to 8.

The Energy System

Energy is the resource you spend to play cards. In Round 1 you get 1 energy, in Round 2 you get 2, and so on up to Round 8. Crucially, any unspent energy is lost at the end of each round — it doesn’t carry over. So plan carefully and try to spend as close to your full energy allowance as possible each turn.

How a Round Works

Each round follows the same four steps:

First, you draw a card from your deck. Then you play cards into one of the three zones, spending energy to do so. Once both players have played, cards are revealed simultaneously and their effects trigger. Finally, power is calculated across all three zones — though remember, goals only happen in Rounds 4 and 8.

Card Types and Skills

Not all cards are created equal. There are four card types to understand:

Base Cards have no special abilities — just raw power stats. These are straightforward but can still be effective in the right deck.

On Appear cards trigger their effect instantly the moment they’re revealed. Great for surprising your opponent.

Active cards have an effect that stays in play for as long as the card is on the field. These can build up a big advantage over multiple rounds.

Non-Specified cards trigger their ability under specific circumstances described in the card text — read them carefully.

Beyond card types, there are also special skills to watch out for. Move allows a card to shift from one zone to another, which can completely change who controls a zone at the last moment. Marking prevents a targeted card from receiving power-ups, which is powerful against high-value players. Booking works like football’s yellow card system — a player who receives two bookings gets a red card, losing all their abilities and power.

The Tactics System

At the end of Round 4, just before the second half begins, both players are offered a Tactic — a special bonus that applies for Rounds 5 to 8. You’re shown three random options and pick one. Some tactics give continuous passive bonuses, others trigger once under specific conditions.

If you don’t like your three options, you can reroll once — but it comes at a cost. You’ll start Round 5 with one less energy than usual, so think carefully before using it.

Rush and Concede

Two optional buttons add a gambling element to every match. If you’re confident you’re going to win, you can hit Rush to double the trophies at stake — though you’ll lose double if things go wrong. If you’re certain you’re going to lose, Concede lets you cut your losses and move on rather than grinding out a hopeless defeat.

Card Upgrades

As you play matches and earn rewards, you can upgrade your cards. Upgrading increases your Collection Level and unlocks further rewards and new players. It’s worth noting that upgrades are purely cosmetic — they don’t change a card’s cost or power, just how it looks.

Tips for New Players

Don’t spread yourself too thin. Trying to win all three zones every round is a losing strategy — focus on dominating two zones consistently and let the third go if needed.

Pay close attention to Round 4. The halfway goals are just as important as the final ones, and many new players neglect the first half entirely.

Manage your energy carefully. Wasting energy by underspending is one of the most common beginner mistakes. Try to build a deck where your cards’ costs let you spend close to your full energy each round.

Read your card skills. A well-timed Move or Marking ability can win a match you looked certain to lose.

Good luck on the pitch — and check back for regular meta reports, tier lists, and deck guides as the game evolves.
